Major Albert Bowman Rogers, who served with the U.S. Cavalry, was
hired in 1881 by Canadian Pacific to find a rail route through the
Selkirk and Rocky mountain ranges. Approaching the Selkirks from
the west, Rogers discovered the pass that now bears his name on
May 29, 1881. The following year, he discovered the eastern approach
of the Beaver River valley. For his efforts, Canadian Pacific awarded
Rogers with $5,000. and a gold watch.
